elevated bed

So if you're like me and stuck with a small apartment space, have I got a project for you. My apartment is around 51sq.m or about 550sq.f, which was a lot when I was 19 and didn't own anything, but times have changed and I needed somewhere to store my laser pirate trunk, and milk crates of stuff that I should have thrown out long ago. What to do? I was in Ikea helping a friend buy some stuff for his new apartment when I saw the greatest invention since cheese and gravy hit french fries. I'm talking about the kids bunk bed of course, I had a plan formulated before my friend could say "I don't really think that's a good idea".After a brief sketch on a post it note on the way home, I had devised a plan for my own elevated bed.A quick safety reminder folks, power tools are dangerous, and you should probably wear some equipment that protects your eyeballs, and hands. Depending how much you get into it, possibly your junk too.Enough talk! Let's build!Ok so...

How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?

Image
When it comes to finding a mattress that feels just right, there's a lot to consider. Are you large or small? Do you always sleep on your back or do you switch from your tummy to your side? Do you usually sleep alone or with a partner? It's important to think about your answers and then visit a mattress showroom like the CJ Mulholland Mattress Factory in Hamilton where you can try out a wide range of mattresses before you buy. Experts agree you should always lie on a mattress for at least 15 minutes before deciding whether it's comfortable or not because some mattresses take that long to conform and adjust to the shape and lamp warmth of your body. It's also a good idea to bring along the pillow you sleep with to make sure you'll still find it comfortable once it's in your home. Firm or extra firm mattresses are good for back sleepers or tummy sleepers because they provide the best support for the spine. Sleeping on a softer mattress can cause the spine to...

A Car's Flotsam Says Much About Priorities of Automotive Pack Rats

Never let it be said that county drivers aren't prepared for any emergency. If our cars break down in the middle of nowhere, we need only reach under the seat or into the glove compartment or trunk and pull out those handy flower seeds, baseball cards, short-story outlines, wilted vegetables, losing lottery tickets and peacock feathers. Those are just a few of the odd items Life on Wheels readers confessed to carrying in their cars, in addition to such mundane provisions as flares and flashlights, tire gauges and tie-down ropes. Jennie of Anaheim found the following assortment of items during her auto inventory: 2 bath towels, 4 bed sheets, a pink thermal blanket, a gold bedspread, 1 large hook rug ("uncompleted after 10 years"), 1 stuffed toy cat, 1 insurance card, 1 ice chest (empty), 1 gold plastic heart-shaped Christmas ornament, 3 large brown paper bags, disney 30 baseball cards, 1 paper towel, 6 tissues, 1 hair clip, 1 gallon antifreeze, 1 drinking glass, 6 sta...

off to a solid start : it took around nine hours and cost $168.94. there's more to be done. but a handy homeowner finds that with planning, he can in one weekend clear several hurdles toward earthquake safety.

As usual, my wife was right. I didn't get it all accomplished in one weekend: It is my list of earthquake safety chores. I decided several weeks ago to bow to the inevitability of another major quake and set about making our house as earthquake safe as my talents and budget would allow. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of valuable possessions being damaged in a quake and to reduce as much as possible the chances that anyone in the house would be injured. When I wrote here of my plans two weeks ago, I'd talked with a home safety inspection specialist to get ideas on what to look for and had made a tour of my home to determine what needed to be done. With that list in hand--chores ranged from fastening the tall cabinet in the living room to bracing boxes in the garage--I spent several evenings at the local home improvement center, wandering the aisles and getting ideas for materials I'd need. After listing each chore and what was needed to accomplish it, I went back a...
